  • Swede - Who has tips & advice

I'm growing Swede for the first time this year. I'm a little bit concerned as I've seen others on my allotment with small/mis-shapen swedes, so I figure there might be a skill to getting good ones. I'd be grateful for any advice people can give me for a good crop.

I don't have club root or anything like that on my plot. In fact, I've found most brassicas to do marvellously, but I've not grown any root brassicas on my plot (not even raddishes)

First of all swede is a brassica so should do well on your soil. I struggled for years to grow sizeable swede before I started sowing them in modules in MPC.
Sow successionally (I usually sow two lots successionally in modules and the last sowing is direct.)
Mine at present are just breaking the surface and will stay in the cold frame until they have established a decent root system.

    Good luck with yours!

Last year was the first year I'd grown them properly, simply direct sowed a 4' row every few weeks. Thinned out as they came up and made sure I netted against caterpillars. No problems and very easy, beautiful, sweet turnips (I only want them small as they're rubbish if they are let to grow big). Grow swede in a similar manner but sowed them all at the same time and ate them gradually over the winter as they will stand better.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Think I may give them a go again this year. Tried a few years ago without much luck and will try sowing in modules and see what happens!

Swede and turnips are similar, they need much protection both for the foliage and for the root balls too.... green and black caterpillars will eat the foliage and maggots will do the job for roots ... please cover the crop with netting or fleece all the time to keep these nasty predators away....
