  • Supporting my spuds

I'm growing mine in those bags you get for growing spuds - 5 per bag. They're flourishing, but some of the stems are now so heavy and huge that they're falling over. How do I provide support? String them all up together? Stake? What with? How?

Been doing a lot of staking lately, what with planting out my toms, supporting my rose bush and all that..I feel like I should have a bottle of holy water and some garlic too....

When you plant potatoes in the ground you "earth them up" which incourages tubers (potatoes) to grow out from the main stem. Obviously the more you earthy up in theory, the more potatoes you get. This adds support to the main stem at the same time I guess.

Is there any way you can earth them up in the pots/tubs?

Well, the spuds are planted near the bottom of the bags so I earthed up as they went..they're a good 1-2 feet down, but the stems are 2 foot high even over that (does that mean lotsa spuds for me?). I don't want to be poking sticks in a skewering potatoes really..do I?

Can you pile up soil in a kind of pyramid around the stem - above the level of the top of the tub?
