  • Supermarket Shallots

    If I were to plant a supermarket shallot would it grow and split to provide multiple shallots?

    The reason I ask is the the seeds at the a Garden Centre look identical in size to the supermarket varieties unlike onions

    the simple answer is maybe. Some shallots are treated to stop them sprouting on the shelf so they will not grow if planted

      Don't know about shallots but Morrisons don't treat their potatoes to stop them sprouting - one of my fellow plot holders uses them - he had a fair crop of potatoes last year.

        I grew a bag of round shallots from a supermarket last year, also some Thai shallots from the same store.
        Don't try Banana shallots though - they won't grow

                Were they these Jonny? Buy banana shallot sets (shallot 'Longor') from our Vegetables range - Tesco.com

                I'm not sure that these are true banana shallots though - as said previously true banana shallots are grown from seed.

                    No idea Jonny. Do you have a photo of the packet? Are they shallots for eating, or shallot sets?

                        Hi everyone. I have just joined. I wanted to add to this thread, that if you do want to try planting shop bought shallots, Tesco have theirs on offer at the moment. I will use some of my saved ones and a bag of these. Tesco Shallot Onions 300G - Groceries - Tesco Groceries

                          Awww I'm growing banana shallots from seed and thought they would multiply! Will have to pick up some shallot sets as well.
