  • Supermarket flower buckets?

I've posted a similar query on a different thread (sorry) but i'm about to head out so hoped I'd get a quicker response starting my own thread ..

Feeling full of the joys of optimism I went to Morrisons to get some of their seed potatoes and flower buckets to grow them in. However, I'm convinced the buckets I've got are far too small and not what others talked about when they said you could grow salad spuds in them.

The ones I have are 23cm circumference and 20 cm deep (9 inches x 8 inches). Surely this is too small for spuds, even 1 to a bucket? Does my Morrisons do weirdly small flower buckets? What would be the minimum container size for salad spud growing?

    Many thanks
    Caro

I think you have landed up with the smaller size buckets. They do one about a foot high (10 litres) which I use for spuds.

I think ShirltheGirl is right, there are two sizes, the smaller ones I use for chillies and such, the larger ones I used last year for tomatoes and cucumbers and additionally will be using some this year for my first and second early potatoes following the advice of Tattieman. Check out Morrisons again, I find if you go first thing they usually have a better selection

And if you have a Co-Op nearby you may even get them for FREE!

As of last year at least - no recycle/resell (even for charity) policy in place.

Use the shallower buckets for say carrots, radish, smaller varieties of toms or even strawberries.

          Thanks everyone,

That confirmed what I suspected; I'll keep looking for the larger sized ones. And I'm sure I'll be able to make good use of the smaller ones I did get.
