  • stupid annoying water butt advert

Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me?

The advert along the bottom of my screen is really intrusive and quite misleading - you end up clicking on it when you don't 'seem' to be hovering over it because you 'seem' to be in an empty white space. And if you click the HIDE option it takes you to the advert page anyway! What a con!

If you haven't got adblocker there should be an icon on the bar so you can close it. There is lots of help and moans in this thread http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ars_83783.html. You are not alone

I finally took everyones advice and downloaded ad blocker, it is free and superb. only problem I had was it doesn't seem to work with the AOL browser so i changed to chrome and that turned out to be far better than the AOL browser anyway, so win win.

Tried ad blocker but it caused loads of other problems. I've given up complaining about the ads on the whole, but I do find it slightly ... unethical.. that when I click on the 'HIDE' option in the water butt advert it just takes me directly to their page anyway. It's a con, and I find it offensive. It's not the ad itself, it's the way I'm being conned that annoys me. Anyway, enough whinging, more important things to do, like sowing seeds!

If the ads here are pay-per-click then the advertiser will be paying (and the forum owners will be earning) a fee every time someone clicks on it.

It might help to know that every time you accidentaly click on the 'unethical' ad then it's costing them money!

Trouble is, if people are fooled into clicking-through an advert the management will see the hit-rate statistics and think that the changes they made to the site have been successful ...

It's very difficult on an iPad not to click them. I tend to hold the IPad in my hand and scroll using my thumbs. This is on the edges where the adverts are!
Hopefully they will take a monthly review on how much pay per click has increased their profits..in my case it's cost them quite a lot with zero profit.

Do like me... any ad that gets up my nose (thats me being polite so i dont get whipped) goes onto my black list and i will make a point of not buying anything from that company.
I hope the advertiser and admin reads this.

Try adblock plus - I am happy with it. It's a totally different company to adblock.

I do wonder how many potential newbies are bombarded with the adverts rather than see the page and don't bother signing up, especially as a lot of folks don't have ad blocking software. It won't be an issue straight away but as natural attrition happens (or folks that swear never to purchase ANY water butt ever again leave) then the vibrancy of the forum will diminish

Its a fact of life that websites cost money to run. People expect to be able to use the internet for free, so the penalty is advertisements everywhere. Yes they are irritating, but I would find having to pay to use each website much more annoying and restrictive. As others have said, if you don't like the adverts, use an ad blocker.

There are better methods IMHO, and I very much doubt that the click-through advertising revenue covers the cost of fiddling with the style-sheets and site templates ... let alone pays the hosting cost. But I could be wrong on that of course, the figure is not in the public domain - which is fair enough

I've tried the "HIDE' button, both on a Hudl and an iMac and it works.

As has already been said if you want free content you've got to have ads, or as Wikipedia does ask for donations.

With years of surfing I've found that I don't notice all the ads.

Ad blockers may need tinkering with if you want to watch commercial catch up TV channels.

There are far worse things on the net. Just try searching for "BUTTS"!!!!!

Interesting, I can hardly see them on mine as they are only a very narrow strip down the sides, clicked on them more often accidently on my work laptop

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've enlarged my screen which makes the writing larger, but manages to exclude the new side adverts!
One less thing to click on accidentally !
