  • Strange Mushroom growing in my Physilis plant pot, anyone an expert?

I cant seem to upload pictures from my phone on here yet ( lost the lead) so I can only describe it.

It's about 2 inches tall cone shaped cap and orangish.

I am loathe to even tough it or fiddle with it for fear of releasing spores, so I dont know what the underside looks like or whether it has gills or not etc. It could be the young version of a mushroom so I am not sure.

It doesnt appear too much like a death cap or destroying angel which I understand are the two m,ost deadly mushrooms about, although I cant be sure it looks too different from this picture of a younger death cap to fully discount it.

    Google Image Result for http://www.dreamstime.com/death-cap-thumb4827031.jpg

Anyone got any ideas what it could be? I will try and get pictures uploaded sometime, but I dont really want to touch it untill I know. Are there any Mycologists on here who can help? Also is it dangerous to even move a poisonous mushroom what with spores and all?

    Thanks

    Rob

Update: I am fairly sure it is not death cap upon reading that they usually grow under large trees and not in 2 plant pots under 2 foot tall cape gooseberry plants! Also that they usually appear in late summer/autumn.

Will try and get a picture tomorrow.

Some of the pictures look like it could possibly be that. Its very much cone shaped at the top, but lacks any gills or scales on the top that this mushroom you show me has.

Think I'm going to have to take a picture to get it indentified for sure.

Are you using compost in your pots? Its probably some residual spores growing on waste material in that.
TBH, I would just grab it and pull it out, its not going to kill you! If you're really worried about doing this, put a plastic bag on your hand, pull the fungi out, turn the bag inside out and tie it up - think Dog poo bags for the technique!! You'll be fine.

Ok will do that tomorrow. I was just concerned about spreading/breathing in posionous spores. Even if it was a deadly variety is it safe to move it? Also can the toxins in any way affect the fruit of the plant if it was growing on the plant?

          Thanks

It won't have poisonous spores, Rob. Nor will it be deadly - or have toxins in it. There are very few deadly fungi (deadly to humans that is) - although there are lots that feed on rotting vegetation and make people think that the fungi was responsible for the death of the host plant. There are a number which would be unpleasant to eat, but at worst they would cause a stomach upset.
If you're the slightest bit concerned about these small fungi affecting your heath, by all means wear a dust mask and use the plastic bag method I said about before. Do it outside too so that there is plenty of fresh air. I am 99% certain that this fungi is growing on some decomposing compost matter in your pot and it is a natural process to aid decompositon. You'll be fine, honest!!
