  • Storm Damage (again)

Very high winds and lashing rain here last night. I'm in bed with Bird Flu, so Mr Sheds brings me up a cuppa and helpfully says "you do know the plastic greenhouses are all over the garden?"

The little with no cover was okay, still upright, but the 4-tier one with the zip-up cover was flat on it's face, with seed trays, plants and compost spread all around.

I've just spent a very cold 30 mins sifting through compost trying to rescue whatever I can ... the broadies were fairly easy to spot, but the onion seeds have probably all had it.

I'd cry, if I had the energy for it.

Can you scoop up the rest of the compost and pop it on an empty bed somewhere- throw a clear plastic container on it with a brick to hold it down? If there are any onion seeds in there, they will soon pop up

What a shame Two Sheds and I hope you soon feel better. You might be able to salvage something. Last year I knocked over a tray of seeds. I left it where it was and up they came. But I was upset about it at the time so know how disappointed you feel. The sun will shine next week and you'll feel much better.

Chin up... These colds and coughs and flus and things that go round at this time of year are horrible, especially when everyone's already feeling gloomy cos summer is over and its getting dark and cold. Yuck. I do sympathise. (I've had the same ratted cough for what seems like weeks and I'm getting really fed up too! Grrr.)

I am listening to the strong wind outside and the sound of my plastic greenhouse cracking in the wind. I have no idea if it will take the strain...

The greenhouse has gone over again in the night ... I haven't the heart or the strength to sort it out, so it can darn well stay there.
I've probably lost 20 baby fuchsias/geraniums, all my broad beans and onions.
If I had the energy, I'd cry.
At least the guinea pig hutch hasn't been turned over, and the girls are all okay.

So sorry to hear of your troubles Two Sheds. As gardeners, we all have failures, but this type caused by bad weather is so frustrating. I hope you start to feel better soon too. Nothing worse than a debilitating flu UGH.

Hi Two sheds, sorry you're not feeling well. I know how you feel about the green house, mine blew over a couple of years ago because I did not put anything on the bottom shelf, it was chocka full of trays with sweetpeas and broad beans, I was devastated it was in April/May so things were romping on. Just had to start all over again, cost me a fortune in seeds that year.

Just a suggestion for your flu, if you can get hold of some Echinacea drops and as soon as you are feeling under the weather start taking 15 drops in a little water two to three times a day until you feel better, it helps fight the infection. It really does work. Get well soon.

It had bricks on the bottom shelf. The best ballast is a bale of compost though, I'll send Mr Sheds out for one on his way home.
It also had the most weight/biggest pots lower down, not on the top shelves. It was also wedged against the wall with boxes and containers of compost.
The wind just picked it up and tossed it over, then blew it round the garden, just for a laff.

                          ----------

I've just spent an hour outside in a gale and drizzle, in my dressing gown, picking broad bean seeds out of the mess. Everything is now repotted, fuchsias and geraniums look OK actually.

The labels though are hopelessly mixed up.

I just sowed another 24 Super Aquedulce broadies into pots, and have left them on the floor - they can't get blown over that way

Good grief. That's chuffin windy. It's the plastic that does it - it acts like a huge sail once the wind gets up it.

I can't remember if you have a greenhouse or not?

I took the plastic off mine as it had ripped and I lost so many nails trying to zip it up without ripping it any more...and I just leave onions/chives/chicory/swiss chard and other seedlings/cuttings on it now - i'll have a greenhouse by the spring so I'll use it as staging from next year.

I really need to pull my finger out and sow some broadies and some peas...

Andrea: chuffin wind - that's nearly what I called it!
We had 30mph winds last night, and 40mph winds due tomorrow.

One of my placcy greenhouses has no cover (ripped on opening the pack ) and I keep the hardy stuff on that.

This one is the slightly stronger B&Q jobby, which has my tenderer stuff in it ... cuttings for next years baskets and containers. I can't leave them without a cover, but it may yet come to that. I can't be repotting everything every morning.
