  • Static Tumbling Toms

I am currently growing Sutton's 100's and 1000's toms as I have never done so before.

I have a few in pots on my windowsill which are going great guns but also put some in hanging baskets a while back.

I thought this would be the right time as we have had some lovely sunny days recently, but after weeks of being in the baskets, they do not appear to have grown!

They are definately not deceased yet, but seem stuck in a perpetual 'mini-plant' phase.

They are in John Innes and are in great positions but stiil no joy, whereas the potted ones are double the size of their hanging basket siblings!

What's going on folks - please tell me!

I've planted up a couple of hanging baskets but at present they are all being cossetted in my greenhouse until it warms up a bit. They will stop growing below a certain temperature even though they won't die it will set them back quite a bit. Is it possible to bring them somewhere warmer for a bit - if you haven't anywhere to hang them then you can support the hanging basket on a bucket or pot.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Do the slow growing ones have any purple on their stems or leaves ? If so, that is an indication of cold.

But don't worry they will take off once the weather warms up.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.

Far to cold at night to have toms outside. Tuesday morning I had to scrape the ice off the car, and I'm further south than you. It makes no difference how hot the day is if it is cold at night they won't grow.

Teakdesk, they are not purple anywhere, but are a much darker green than the others.

Had them indoors at night and under a cloche if the day is a bit chilly and they seem to have picked up a little.

Definately think that cold has been a factor but think I am beginning to crack it now!
