  • Starting a Chilli now to overwinter

Last year I overwintered some chilli plants that I grew in my greenhouse border and they're doing really well this year.

I sowed some Cayenne seeds much earlier this year and I hoped to overwinter the cayenne plant but it's not doing too well. I had a problem with aphids earlier in the year and now the leaves on the plant are curling a lot. I've found a few aphids since but they seem to be under control now and I don't think I'm under or over watering (the rest of the plants are fine) so I'm wondering if it got a virus from the aphids.

I'd rather overwinter a healthier plant and I'm wondering if it's viable to sow some more cayenne seeds now specifically with the purpose of overwintering the plant (not expecting any fruit from it this year as it's so late in the season).

I can't see why not, and if you experiment and it doesn't work what will you lose? A couple of seeds and a pot of compost? Has to be worth a go

      Good point, well made!

I was clearly over thinking things... something that should never be done at that time of the morning!

Cayennes don't overwinter too well in my experience, to the point where now I don't bother to include any in my schedule, even if the plant/s are in good condition. By all means have a go, nothing to lose, but if you're short on space to overwinter plants, I'd choose something else. Go a tad hotter e.g Thai strains, Bird's Eye, Fatalli, Hot Lemon - they're all very consistent and recommended for overwintering.

Has Philthy says, don't bother overwintering the Annum genus like Cayenne etca fresh sowing in late Feb will grow just as quick as an overwintered (if successful) and fruit relatively the same time
