  • Staggered potato plants

A few weeks ago i bought 2 grow bags from Wilkos and planted 3 Red Duke of York seeds in each. The other day i looked and in 1 bag there was a plant about 15cm high, a plant about 3cm high right up against the bag and and plant just poking through.
I covered the tall plant and the little plant and the tall 1 is poking through again.

    What do i do?

In the other bag they seem to be just poking through.

    Is this right?

    Thanks

How deep did you plant them? Ideally all the seed potatoes should have been about the same size and with good sprouts on them - then they would grow at more or less the same rate. Where are your bags?

I put 3/4 inch compost, planted them and covered with 3/4 inch compost.
Each seed had about 2 sprouts on and i put them staninding up.

        Do you mean three-quarters of an inch? ... 3" to 4" ?

Is that threequarters of an inch, or 3 to 4 inches?

I planted up four large tubs in the front garden several weeks ago. They are all Charlotte, all more or less the same size, same depth, sameish sprouts (ie all excess rubbed off) and one is showing a few leaves, one is showing one and the others have zilch!

For what it's worth, I planted D of Y in potato 2 bags in my tunnel. They were all the same size with the same sort of number and length sprouts. They too, came up at different times. I was also really unsure how to deal with this but what I did was keep dumping compost round the tall ones and gradually add compost to the shorter ones as they grew. The tall ones were never quite as well "ridged up" as I would have liked and the short ones always looked "well tucked in". I kept this up until the compost was at the top of the bag. All the plants are now the same height and looking really healthy. I also planted Crystal at the same time. These have all grown much more evenly and more slowly but are now towering above the bag. I kept them well watered and fed with comfrey tea.

So try differentiated "ridging up" - maybe - I'll only know when I harvest!

It's the first time I've grown new potatoes and would be interested to know what RL and TS have to say about what I did (but be kind, please!).

Can I ask - does it matter if they flower or does that mean they are over?

For future reference Jason, you may have been better cutting the growbag in half so you have 2 planters standing on their end if that makes sence. Just lay the growbag over your arm so that it falls over into 2 seperate halves. You could have then put 2/3 seeds in each planter.

we both used to be shorthand typists, can you tell?

Spuds: mine grow at different rates too, it's nothing to worry about. Not every spud is the same or has the same experience: some will be nearer the light, warmer, get more water etc
