squashes/courgettes planting soon?

    squashes/courgettes planting soon?

    I was curious if anyone has planted out their squashes or courgettes yet?

    Or if they are likely to do so soon?

    I am hoping to do mine 1st week of May (weather dependant)

    Only sowed mine on Friday. Will be planting out towards the end of May, they get really sulky if too cold.

    Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

    Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

      Sowed mine today (indoors). They have suicidal tendencies if exposed to cold.

        I'll be sowing mine either this week or next but won't be rushing because they don't get planted out until the end of May to beginning of June.
        Location....East Midlands.

            Ah, maybe I planted mine too early then and that's why they all failed to germinate. I followed what it said on the packet, and they were indoors in propagator, about 3 weeks ago. Patty Pan squashes, Zucchini, and a Yellow courgette. Total failure.

            Guess I 'd better sow some more then.

                Have planted some out here but under a cloche. Have more coming on in the GH just in case!!

                  Time of the year would not make a difference, if they were in a warm spot - in your propagator. They should have been up in a couple of days.

                  Might they have been too wet? (or old seed? but even then I would expect seed to be viable for a couple of years ... or three even).

                    Iv had mine in greenhouse for three weeks and plante a load out tonight- temp is a tad warmer here but you have all made me doubt myself!!!! Are the decorative squash ok to eat??

                        Averaging 17 in the day and 5 at night at the min we are having a bit of a cool period. I have planted out half of my started plants,i will wat a week and put the rest out onto the mounds you can see i my pics in the thread 2014 calender..i have another 6 mounds to make then i will be running out of space..maybe you can tell me why my chilis arent germinating? Everything is germinating apart from my birds eye chilis that are in the greenhouse?

                          It depends, they're very unlikely to be actually bad for you but probably won't be the best tasting ones as they'll have been selected for appearance rather than taste.

                          Rather cold at night then, you'd probably be best providing protection, bottle cloches are good. Chilies do need heat to reliably germinate, suggest you give them some warmth for a few days (heated propagator or airing cupboard) and put them back in the greenhouse (if warm enough) after germination as they can grow on at lower temps although will stall below 10 degrees.

                            As Alison says, chillies need warmth to germinate.

                            I start mine in a heated propogator. Which is consistently at around 28 degrees centigrade.

                            Also, your temperatures are not too far off mine, here in South Wales.

                            We are averaging around 13-15 degrees C in the day, and 7 - 10 at night.

                            My chillies are all in g/h, with paraffin heater on at night time.

                              Ah. Stall below 10° that will be the problem then . As for the small squash,,i just thought ,,the potimarron/red kuri squas is small and is super tasty so maybe they might be ok? I have planted allsorts of squash and pumpkins . Love butternut!!
