I have Maris piper & pink fir apples in the same bed in rows next to each other. Pink fir apples are lovely, Maris piper look more like Swiss cheese with slug damage. Any ideas why this is happening?

Slugs are picky creatures if they have a glut of food. The Maris Piper probably smell better to them compared to the Pink Fir.

With me, if I have a plate of smoked salmon and plate of raw cuttlefish put in front of me I always go for the smoked salmon. It's the same with slugs, they like what they like.

I guess this is why the slug attacks on crops always seem to be worst immediately after a weeding / tidy up session: we've taken away their favourite food?

No, you've just made it easier to get to the stuff they were eating through the weeds towards!
