The sprout plants I have grown this year are hopeless. All the sprouts have opened up I have no sprouts that are any good at all.
What am I doing wrong, is there a foolproof variety?

I believe the main thing with sprouts is to really firm them in when planting. After firming the soil with your foot, do it again. Like BM says they need to be firmed in well so the mature plant doesn't rock but you can still eat those sprouts and the plant tops.Location....East Midlands.Comment

With sprouts the variety you choose is also key, the F1 varieties really are better than the old ones. A good variety that works for me is Crispus.Comment

I struggle with sprouts too, every time. I do get a few which are firm, but not many, and often at the top rather than the bottom of the plant, which seems weird. I do try to firm them in, but I'm trying to move towards a no-dig bed system, which says you're not supposed to compact the earth by walking on blah blah blah! Difficult to reconcile all these different rules! Argh!sigpicGardening in France rocks!Comment

It won't matter Kathy, you are only compacting the soil around the plant then when you lift them you will be incomp, discomp, uncomp...........loosening the soil again..........

First time I grew sprouts I had more than I new what to do with. Last two years not had enough to shake a turkey leg at. Wish I could work out what I did first time, ah well tbere is always next year.Comment

Last year, I grew three plants from seed- then gave one to a friend who was helping me on the plot, and was growing a few things in one of my beds as a thanks/trial to see if she wanted a lottie. The two plants on my bed had tiny pea size sproutlets on. Her one plant, which was less than 3 feet away, and had been treated exactly the same (I wound up looking after it, so I know it didn't get anything extra) was a perfect full stalk of beautiful big round sprouts, eaten with Christmas dinner.
