Default Sprouting sunflower seeds

Wasn't sure if this was the best place, but as they are eaten in salad....

I bought some sprouting seeds from T&M and among them were sunflower seeds, but the problem was, although they sprouted easily and tasted delicious, they did not lose their seed coats, which remained hard and inedible. Individually removing each one took ages.

I buy hulled sunflower seeds from the health food shop, so wondered if these would sprout. I sorted out a number of unbroken ones, so I did not have broken seeds rotting in among the growing sprouts, and gave them a go. Within a day the roots began to grow, and by 2 days they were mini plants, their seeds leaves open and with a decent root. Lovely and crunchy with a fresh nutty taste. The membrane covering the seed comes off quite easily, but are so soft that they are not a problem to eat, in the same was as the seed coats on sprouted beans.

Just thought I'd share this sucess, as I thought hulled seeds unlikely to sprout. I am now thinking of getting some hulled pumpkin seeds and seeing what they can do!
