  • Spring Onions

I have planted spring onions seeds in various size pots etc but I would like to sow seeds in small 1 Lite pots , how many seeds should I go for

After its reached optimum size what size pot should I then aim for transplanting them

same question for chinese garlic chives , choy sum , chinese kale and chinese celery

I am thinking as a general rule 6 seeds for the spring onion and 4 seeds for the rest as an experiment.

Will this enable a big enough plant for eventually grow

    Many thanks

You can put more Chinese chives than that it - sow a good sized pinch.

My spring onion get sown a good size pinch to a 3" thumb pot, out of that maybe 10 will germinate. When the seedling are stable that are trans planted as a bunch into 6" deep troughs, usually 6 bunches to a 18" long trough.

Choy sum , Chinese Kale and Chinese Celery are all largish plants and a 1 litre pot won't be big enough. If you were planting them in the ground they would be 10 inches or so between plants so you need a container closer to this size to grow them in pots.

Hmm that's why my spring onions never come up, I've just been whacking them straight in the ground! I'll try sowing in pots first

I will try to find a pot that can incorportate them. I assue you thin down the kale , chives , and choy sum , I have some 7.5 Litre pots I assume this will suffice , Would I need one or 2 seeds to germinate ?

Do you concur that transplanting basils and Choy sum , chinese celerty , kale will not work ?

Chives can be 30-40+ seeds in a 1 litre pot - they're small bulbs which naturally split to form clumps - just sprinkle the seeds round the pot a bit rather than all in the centre.

The Chinese Kale, Choy Sum, Celery would be 1 plant to a large pot - sow 2 or 3 seeds then when they've germinated remove the weakest seedlings and leave the strongest one. I transplant brassicas (kale, choy sum are brassicas) from the smaller pots or from a seed bed to their final growing positions.
