  • Spring Onions - Shimonita?

Described by DT Brown as a spring onion that thinks it's a leek - Ancient Japanese variety etc. Has anybody tried this variety?

Yes, I have them growing in the garden at the moment. They are bunching onions.

I don't think it's leek-like, it's just about the size and shape of a young leek (ie, it doesn't form a bulb at the bottom like, say, Bedfordshire Champion does).

      Buy Shimonita Spring Onion Seeds

You can also sow White Lisbon in late summer (you don't need to buy Shimonita especially). This is the only way I can get "spring" onions in the spring: sow in Sept/early Oct, harvest from March onwards.

Thank you - if you have them growing in the garden they might fill a gap for me while I wait for the leeks. Does it have an onion or leeky flavour?

They are perennials - so you treat them like Welsh onions and take a few and leave the rest. I'm leaving mine to bulk up for next winter.

They taste like onions. No idea why they have said they are like leeks - they aren't.

Mine don't look like that! Just like a bunch of large spring onions. I suppose maybe next year when they are larger they will fill out to that width.

Thank you for the input - next year oniony - leeky things it is then.
