  • spring onion still in pots outside.

Got spring onion plug plants with ordering the mag last year and put them into a pot. I used a few early on but the missus doesn't like them so haven't harvested the rest yet. Anyway. They seem to have a weird outer layer and also they are almost the size of leeks! I'm just wanting to get people's opinion whether they are still good to use and potentially the we bubble bit at the top is it flowering?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Hearts, yes they are running to seed
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

I'd let them flower and collect the seed. They have lovely flowers!

Those papery bits look like old leaves.

If you were to cut the stems they would be very woody but the flowers are edible.

I tend to chuck any non woody bits I have in soups.

Once they have flowered the whole plant will die back as they are biennial. Saving the seeds to sprinkle and then grow near carrots will help deter aphids and carrot fly!

      ...just a few random thoughts!!!

Thanks! Yeah I'm quite keen on collecting seeds as I've heard that if u do so year after year you will basically create a 'variety' that suits your area best.

I'm saying that I don't have a clue about how to go about collecting seeds. What's the best thing to do?
