  • Spring cabbage?

Hey there - just a quick thought; is it still worth sowing spring cabbage now?

Thinking of sowing into modules, growing indoors and then planting out when they're a decent size - to be honest I think I'll give it a go anyway but would appreciate any comments/advice.

Are we too late now? Worrying that they'll not be in the ground soon enough to give them a good start before the cold comes on......

If anyone north of Brum has done this in the past at this late stage and had the cabbages come out alright, I'd love to hear about it, too

Have a go, it's a little bit late; you should really be planting the seedlings out now. I haven't tried it myself.

I might be having a go - just got my full plot so I can't bear looking at that empty space!

I suppose you could always cloche them til they get established in the open ground.

Sowed some more just over a week ago and the Garden Centres are still selling very small plants - although to be fair, I'm not convinced about those plants as they're also selling inch high PSB which is well behind where I'd expect it to be by now.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I sowed some spring cabbage later than this last year and potted them up in the greenhouse. Unfortunately I didn't plant them out before the cold weather came so I just left them until about the middle of march.
Once planted out they soon caught up with neighbouring plots, so I might do it again this year.

2 suggestions AVB: as the results next Spring might end up smaller because of a bit of a delayed start, plant more than you normally would - at the very least you'll be able to use them as a version of spring greens. Also if you already know where you're eventually going to plant them out, a dressing with garden lime (e.g. from Wilcos) could be weathering in meantime and prove beneficial, brassicas like lime... b.

Thanks all of you for the experience and advice - now have 40-odd toilet rolls planted up with cabbage seed; see how they get on, then!
