  • Spinach seedlings bolting

Planted out some Bloomsdale long standing spinach a week ago and it's started bolting.

This is the first year I've grown spinach so not sure what was supposed to happen.

Can anyone let me know if this is normal, due to time of year, or can I sow another lot without it bolting again or is it the case of sowing a different variety for this time of year?

    Thanks :-)

Adding that the first lot I planted did well

Spinach has a tendency to bolt given the slightest excuse which is why I have given up on it and only grow spinach beet. It could be that it has been too dry even for only 24 hours. I would try again and sow direct and keep moist at all times. Not sure that spinach likes being replanted.

Thanks for that roitlet, I'll sow some more today.

I sowed the first lot in pots, then planted on into the raised beds and as said above these were fine

I always find spinach bolts once the weather gets warm - sometimes when the leaves are less than an inch long. This year I am trying Amazon, which is supposed to be bolt resistant, but it is already showing signs of flower buds. Keep it cool and shady and well watered - best results for me have been from a self-watering pot.
