  • Spent hops = wasps?

I had a little brainwave yesterday...the large patch that I'm going to grow my squash on this year has been rather neglected and now that it's rock hard I'm not sure I'll be able to get it all dug properly...so my idea is to just hoe off the weeds, dig holes and fill with compost where the plants will go and cover the rest with spent hops as a mulch(if I can find some)...the ground is pretty heavy and could do with some reconditioning and I guessed the spent hops would do a combination of keeping the weeds down this year and then improve the soil a bit when dug in come winter.

Problem is,I have a really bad fear of wasps,I know I can't do anything to totally rid my plot of them but would the smell of hops attract more than usual or does the smell diminish after a while?

I have used spent hops as mulch on my runner bean trench for a couple of summer and have never had a wasp problem.. I too hate the little Jaspers. They are almost as bad as flying pigs and slugs in my book.

      You have flying slugs?
The problem with rounded personalities is they don't tesselate.

Here too sadly. As are the meeces. We once had to drive a mile in our nightclothes to release one.

(One of these, I meant, rather than a homing slug)

Just called at the brewery for more hops ready to mix with shreaded paper as a mulch for the beans.
My car smells wonderful now and no sign of flying slugs snails or wasps.

I'm thinking of just laying several layers of newspaper down and covering it with the hops.

Getting a little worried I may get slimed from up above now though!
