  • Spending on seed challenge.

It is very tempting to see many different seeds and jumping into buying some..next is going to be my 2nd growing season. kept on buying for upcoming season. still not sure I have enough and stop

So have decided to spend max of £20 for seeds, potato and onions including flowers.

so would like to spend my money into improving the harvests or improving the plot than to spending time and money on seeds as I have atleast one type of many veg seeds.

anyone interested to join in!!! will keep posted on what I have sown ,and spending etc.

Brilliant idea! Do we have to include postage for seed swaps .

This is one challenge I dare not join as it would be far too frightening!

I'd love to see how you all get on doing that.

I'd join in but I am not sure if I am going to grow anything next year until I get a garden or an allotment.

Currently cataloguing my seeds - so far about 130 different varieties.

Still, knowing me I'd fail. There's always the weird and wonderful effect like spiked tomato or purple flowering chilli (hang on I think I've got both of these).

I clicked thinking this would be how much can we all spend if we didn't restrict ourselves! I attempted to spend twenty quid last year. It lasted 2 months. Now I accept that my plot is what I spend my money on, and other people buy lots of clothes they don't wear or lively nights out at sticky floor nightclubs. I buy seed and things for my plot. Which does mean I get to enjoy giving seed away, and I've had a few enjoyable evenings discussing which seed my friend wants over a jar at our local.

I'd suggest joining in the vsp and other seed swaps if you want to save money. People like me buy seed at 3 pounds a pack sometimes and then send it into the swap. That's a good way of saving money.

yeah, need to include the postage for seed swaps...can we organize it to minimise the postage ??

now I need to send 3 SAE's one for VC,one for seed circle and 3rd fo tomato circle ..that would leave me not to buy any more seeds outside. help VC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                    rosiepumpkin,

will be more into saving, swaping and sharing the seeds. I realised been spending more on postage whenever I tempted to buy and adding up more and more to match the free delivery. instead want to use up as much as I have and learn growing different veg in first few years while my 2 plots are developing.

The 2 seed circles and the VSP are run by different people - so there is no option for combining them.
You need to weigh up the cost of the postage against buying seeds direct from a shop/garden centre.
£20 would buy a lot of seeds from somewhere like L1dl/Aldi at about 29p a packet.

that is fine VC. all 20 is not just for seeds.. like to buy around 200 onion sets, 30 seed potatoes and few shallots.

I will send the SAE's separately then.

Gosh- just the thought of how much free time someone has to put in to keep on top of just one of the seed swaps makes me raise my hat to the peeps who run them!

combining all 3 would be a complete headache!!!!!

I think we forget what it takes to organise these things ( including trips to the post office and queuing up if nec for some packages to be weighed and costed)

All from the goodness of their hearts.
                          Thank you x

Like rosiepumpkin, I'd struggle massively with this! I get my spuds and garlic from different places so there is postage on those, I run a seed circle, am in another 2 now (your fault Scarlet!!), plus there is the VSP...and the Wyevale 50p sale which surely must happen any day now...Plus I want to try grafting this winter and I 'need' a damson cordon...

I've got comfortable with having a seed habit. I do have way more seeds than I need, but I like being able to offer seeds to friends and put them in the VSP. It's also far, far cheaper than my previous shoe and cocktail habit.
