    Spacing of plants

    Morning all,

    Just a quick note to see does everyone keep to the spacing instructions for all vegetables or do people give a little?

    I have done square footgardening in the past on my liitle raised bed now I have an allotment, (tooooo much space for square foot gardening, but just wanted to know does everyone keep to the veg guidelines or does it just depend on what you are growing?

    most of the things like carrots and onions turnips etc, i've just sown in a square metre, then covered in an inch or so of compost, then as they grow they push each other apart, and i just pull out the biggest ones. i've found that much easier than rows, as you don't get huge gaps and don't have to worry about straight lines

    caulis broccoli etc i germinated in a seed tray, then planted out individually as they got bigger, courgettes and big plants like that i grew in modules, then planted out about 2 foot apart, and grew them up a wigwam thing ....... and potatoes were about 18 inches apart.

      If you've got an allotment, you might want to space your greedy thirsty veg (like broccoli) further apart, so that they have more nutrients to themselves. You'll end up using less water too.
