  • sowing tomatoes

I have sown my first tomatoes between xmas and new year for the past couple of years, but can't find the info for the right moon day for this year... anyone have that handy?

Thanks... if not I will just do them when OH is well enough to go fetch the propagator from the loft.

Thanks - thought I must have missed one but ho-hum I am too poorly to sow them and OH is too poorly to go up the loft and fetch the propagator.

Hopefully I will be ready then for the 3rd jan

Sow them on 3rd then pop in prop on the 4th. They won't grow much in 24 hrs

Click on the moon link - and you will see the 4th is also a moon date.

Not that toms need a propagator mind, just somewhere warm at night and light in the day.

Well, for the first time this year, I'm going to WAIT. GASP!!! I'm not going to sow early as I am convinced that the later sown ones catch up and make better plants as they haven't been struggling with the cold, low light levels etc..... as I'm not going to spend a fortune heating the greenhouse and fretting and worrying.......I may live to regret this.....

I just pop a few in the kitchen - nothing that takes up more than one gravel tray; just enough to keep some interest going. I'd not heat a greenhouse for it!

I do have a huge kitchen window though.

I'll start a proper tom sowing thread on the 3rd.

I only have 2 small window sills (3 Foot each), how many plants would you suggest I sow in Jan? Also, Could I transfer them to the cold GH in Feb/Mar? This is my first year of sowing seeds and GH growing, so apologies for the basic questions.

They won't be able to go into a cold g/h then - bit early as night time temps will still be too cold for them

Same here, although I might just do a few that I can keep inside. The trouble with sowing to early is what to do with them when they are too big for the house, and still risk of frost in the greenhouse. I had some this year that survived the early cold in the polytunnel, but the later ones overtook them.

Saying that, as soon as we get a nice sunny day I bet I will weaken.

Already sown a couple of tom seeds but will sow 3 types on the 3rd, which will go into a hydroponic hanging basket. Which will then sit nice and toastie on my dining table, next to a south facing window. Dining tables are for plants? Mr Frosty does not believe me, he thinks you eat meals at them
