  • Sowing and Planting Calendar

As a relatively new gardener I never really knew what to sow or plant out, and when.

All the info I need is buried in amongst the many gardening books I have bought or been given, so I decided to spend some time to bring all this information into one place.

I have eventually come up with my very own Gardening Calendar created in Excel

    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bzlq...it?usp=sharing

This shows which seeds can be planted each month, either indoors, outdoors or outdoors under cover, and also shows when indoor planted seeds can be planted out.

You need to scroll down to page 3 on the uploaded file to see the calendar itself. (the coloured pages) or just download it.

I would appreciate any comments that you may have, good or bad.

    Andy

Looks very comprehensive, kept you busy over the winter months. Will be interesting to compare planting times as I'm further south than you.

      Hi Wendy

It only took a weekend to complete - I can work fast when I need to.

I have used average planting times as it will always depend upon the local conditions as to when you actually take the plunge and plant out your delicate seedlings.

            Thanks BigM

I have seen that one before, and even though it is more detailed than mine with the hover-over notes it had very few notes on starting seeds off indoors, it all seems to be aimed at planting directly outside.

That was one of the reasons I created mine.

Really well done, it looks great!

I am in Cornwall, but as far as I am aware, the location difference wouldn't make too much of a difference?

Thanks Adam (or is it John? )

No, there shouldn't be too much difference, but just use common sense and look out of the window before deciding to plant anything out.

All areas have their own peculiar microclimate that generic lists cannot hope to deal with - it is an aid to memory, nothing more, if you use it like that I hope it will be of use.

That's a pretty good one - if I had seen that first I might not have started mine

                          A gardener?

To be honest, BigM, you're probably right in that I have loads of these charts but don't really use them because they don't contain all the info that I need.

That was why I started to work on my own last weekend - then I find that there is loads more info that I need that I don't have on there ..................... not yet anyway.

I can feel another weekend sat in front of the PC coming on

I have a spreadsheet listing all packs of seeds with the sowing times and spacing etc - different varieties of something can be sown at different times of the year, so they can all be included easily - this is a screenshot of an old spreadsheet

i find this very useful, especially as the missus has bought hundreds of packets of seeds - if we get another pack of seeds we can add at the bottom and sort alphabetically - 2 columns per month show if we can sow early in the month or late in the month - today is in the first half of feb, so if i look down the first column for feb, i can see everything i can sow right now ... simples!

i must get round to finishing the new one

I have one I did in Excel too. Unfortunately I lost it when my poota crashed, but I have one printed copy, that sometime I will retype up. I included germination time, and also number of days/weeks to maturity, which is helpful if you are succession gardening.

I don't use it a lot though, it's easier to sort seed packets into "sow by" months - keep all the March ones together, all the April ones etc, and if they can be sown in more than one month, just keep moving them to the next pile once I've sown some for the first month.

                              Endless wonder.
