  • Source of Paraffin

Was in the GH on Sunday, boy was it cold even with bubble wrap on roof.
Was going to put some lettuce seeds in.
Too cold to work in there (getting old now).
So I fished my Granddads old Aladdin Paraffin heater out from the back of the garage.
Tidied up the wick and it seemed to fire up OK.
    But short on paraffin.

Where can you get paraffin in small quantities these days ?
I use to take a metal can to the garage, most used to sell it.
Do you need a special container of will an old metal can do ?

    Thanks
    Jimmy

I used to get it from the chandlers shop round the corner from my dads. I didnt know B&Q and those shops sold it. I learned something already today and its only10a.

When I read this, I had an image of the source of the Nile in my head. Its sounds like an exotic hunt, I'm going on an expedition to find the Source of Paraffin, I may be gone some time.

I find electric heating much cheaper to run - after the installation costs..Took the plunge after 28 years of paraffin heaters...

Wondering if you could use heating oil as it is normally cheaper than paraffin

heating oil or even diesel works if you adjust/trim the wick to get a decent burn

Well the cost is not an issue as it's not for general heating for the plants, I have a big electric propagator for that.
It's to keep old Jimmy warm when he is pottering in the greenhouse.
Also it seems to have a removable top so you can put a kettle or pan on it.
So when I escape to the Greenhouse I might make a brew , or have eggs&bacon on fried bread.
Hmm I think it has possibilities....

I'm waiting until it warms up a bit ~ I can't justify heating the gh just to gain a week, when it's going to be warm enough in a couple of weeks' time
