  • Sorting out squash

Hi all - hope everyone else is more in control of their garden than me!

I am trying to work out which squash goes where on my plot, trouble is I'm not certain of their habits...

Am I right in thinking that winter squash are the ones you leave until fully mature before harvesting (like pumpkins) whereas summer squash are the ones you pick regularly and eat as immature fruits (like courgettes)? If so then I know I can put the winter squashes in the less accessible places but make sure I can get at the summer ones!

The other question is about growth habits, as I'm growing quite a few that I've not grown before! My pumpkins, butternuts, courgettes etc I know what to do with but:

Winter Festival (winter squash, think it is a trailing / vine type?)
    Sunburst (summer squash, bush type?)
Pattison Orange (summer squash, growth habit???? I'm guessing bush but cannot find a definitive answer)

I'm feeling a bit overrun with squash! Did I mention that I'm also growing two types of ornamental gourds for my littl'un? oh and melons and cukes too, just in case the other cucurbits get lonely...
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

I'm in the same boat as you re the pumpkins and squash this year. I have lots doing really well in the GH and they'll be coming our over the next few days but not yet 100% on what I'm going to do with them - this s the first year I've had success germinating them.

I have 2 old wheelbarrows ready for BNS - I'm letting them tumble over the side of the wheelbarrows and trail down railway sleeper steps in the garden. I'm putting 2 or 3 Crown Prince in the ground and letting them work their way over to the early spuds which should be lifted by the time they get there. I picked up a few sturdy trellises from my timber merchant today and I'd like to try training some others up the trellis structures.

Ha, that sounds like it here too. I've got some bits of the allotment I'm not going to dig this year, so I'm planting a few squashes round the edge so the vines can grow over the bits I'm not digging (they are carpeted) and I will sort them out in autumn when everything is ripe. And a couple of BNS in amongst the sweetcorn - so it's mainly the summer / bush ones I'm going to have trouble with - I've 4 courgette plants in already, and another bed earmarked for sunburst (also sharing with sweetcorn but not interplanted), but as for the pattison, no idea yet lol!

Would like to plant some out this weekend, so would be nice if a squash expert could help confirm my guesses as to growth habits etc... anyone?

      Ta
      xx
