  • Something on my veg?

    Hi,

I went in to the garden today to water my veg in the greenhouse and noticed when I was watering them that a few of my veg stems(Cauli and sprouts) there stems was white and when I wiped it away it looked like white paint on my hand.

Does anyone know what this could be?

your photo is all blurred (it's focussed on the background rather than the stem), but it sounds like downy mildew

I will take another picture when I have finished getting ready for work. It is only on the stem, the leaves are fine and healthy.

Sounds like mildew to me to. Can I ask why you have them in the green house? It maybe the moist atmosphere in there is the culprit.

Sorry forgot to take a picture before I went to work. I will take one when I get home.

Is there anything that can get rid of it?

It's in a raised bed greenhouse. I can leave the windows wide open

Looks like mildew to me. Lots of air, they say to spray with a weak solution of semi skimmed milk or baking soda is beneficial, something to do with raising the PH levels. I get it constantly on courgettes and cucumbers and I have to say the spraying only partially works but if it hasn't got to the leaves yet you may save them yet..

It just looks like the natural bloom you get on brassica stems to me

What happens if it does go to the leafs?

Isn't that just what happens with brassicas? The plants look fine and they do mark like that when you rub them. Never noticed the white stuff, but I'd just ignore it.
