Soil temperature for sowing.

    Soil temperature for sowing.

    Just installed a soil temperature "spike" in my raised bed.
    It radios the soil and air temp to my PC every minute.
    In spring what temp should the soil be for sowing ?

    Unless it's really delicate stuff like Q's, peppers and beans etc I think it should be about 5 degrees.

    Please don't qoute me of this though as it might well be wrong.

    I try and help the soil along a bit by putting a bit of black plastic on top at the end of Dec.

      Currently registering 10 DegC in soil and about 13 in Air
      Expect the worst in life and you will probably have under estimated!

        Sow seeds when the soil is warm enough to sit on with a bare bottom - or test with your elbow

          I was hoping that my temperature sensor would preclude me from inserting various bodily appendages into cold damp soil.

                  And here's another chart to compare with...

                  Thing is, with a mild Spring the soil temp can arrive 'early' and then you get a cold snap which spoils everything!
