  • Snapped sweetcorn stem

    Hi all,

This is my first year growing sweetcorn. Had a bad start with slugs and snails almost decimating them, but after tackling them with beer traps the plants recoveredand are now ~2ft tall and all growing well.

Until this morning that is - one of my cats landed on one (either from a jump or a fall - not sure which) and snapped the stem near the base. Photo below.

I have put a stake right next to the stem, aligned the stem best I could and securely tied it to the stake. But is there any hope? Anything else I could try?

If there is nothing I can for this plant - is it worth replacing it at this stage?

Many thanks for any help - and don't worry, the cat is fine!

Hello & welcome to the vine! Sorry to hear about your plant,It's a bit late to replace because they all need to be at the same stage of development when being pollinated by each other. Have you got many other sweetcorn plants & are they growing in a line or in a block because they need to be quite close but I can't see anymore in the photo? The least I've ever grown is 6 but they do need a gentle shaking to help with pollinating.

Thank you for the kind welcome and response!

I have nine in total, planted in a 3ft-sq raised bed - went with most I could fit in based on them being 18in apart, so its a block of 3x3. So I'm quite worried to lose one and be down to 8.

Part of me kicks myself I didn't have them individually staked - but then again, that may have meant my cat coming off worse!

You should be alright with 8,but help by shaking the tassels to try to get pollen on the hairs when the time comes, each hair is connected to a corn & each needs pollen or you get gaps in the corn, which is still fine to eat though. When they get to about 4 ft you might start to see the tassels at the top of the plant.

Update: Well, after aligning the snapped stem and staking, growth has definitely been hit - but it is today (behind the others) starting to produce a male flower on top! #nevergiveup
