I bought a 7.5kg bag of reduced potatoes from Tesco last week. Variety 'Smile'. I had never tried them before and I am most impressed with texture and flavour. I would like to keep some for growing next year. How do I stop them chitting too early.

I have noticed that shop bought spuds start sprouting in a dark cupboard. Not sure if darkness speeds up the process though.

Just rub the chits off if they grow.

This was copied from a site dated March if it helps, It confirm HansMums' suggestion.

"I would leave them and place them in some light. Last year I saved some of the seed potatoes in the fridge, wrapped in newspaper, to plant out in August/September for a Christmas crop of new potatoes, when I unwrapped them they had some long shoots on them, planted them and they were fine."

Thanks everyone. I'll pick out 6 wrap in newspaper, place in fridge veg box, rub off chits if and when and plant next spring. Nothing to lose.

I've kept my spuds (for replanting) in the salad drawer since digging them up in the summer: no sprouts yet.

Chitting is temperature dependent. Once a big enough quantity of a certain wee protein has changed shape due to warmth, it triggers the process.

If you put an apple in with stored potatoes it stops them from sprouting. This should be a homegrown apple as many bought ones are waxed.

I am certainly no tattie expert. I just love eating potatoe and found 'smile' to be just up my street. Thanks for the comfidence boost Redthorn.
