  • Small holes pest

Oh deary me, I know I am guilty of posting tales of woe but this seems to be a permanent problem in my garden and so far nobody has identified it (see other post on broad bean holes). Usually my chard only gets leaf miner but i have it covered with a fleece dome so no idea how this pest has got in. It also plays havoc with my top broad bean leaves resulting full blown in twisted, distorted beans if not nipped out. They are def not slugs because the holes are not consistent with slug damage. No slime and no slugs at all when regular inspected. They don't seem to like the wooden raised beds much to my delight. No insect or aphids in sight. I did spot in the main garden the other day a tiny springing pale insect like a miniture grasshopper which I have seen in the past.

Here are some leafs as well as a broad bean top.

You may not think it's slugs but they are crafty. I planted out my beans today. They have holes, I've looked everywhere for the culprit but I couldn't find them until today....lovely little small slugs tucked up within the roots inside the pots...they stay hidden within the soil.

I've just taken a few snaps of holes too

A cabbage in a netted cage - safeish from butterflies - but full of holes

          Slime trails on leaves

Beneath the leaf a tiny spider!

I've waited months for this cabbage to heart up............

Here's a holy lettuce (its Sunday!)

          More holes anyone?

Again, it's def not slugs as they don't cause the leaf to distort into horrid shapes. I know slug damage and it isn't that. It's some kind of insect that makes holes and sucks the sap. No slugs anywhere to be found on any part of the leaf.

I have exactly the same problem with my lettuce, I posted the pictures some time ago, but I still have no idea what it is... the problem persists, so I bought netting. A spider has set up a web so I hope it will catch the sap sucking predators... Would be great to know what it is! It looks like Flea Beatle damage... I guess, cause I cant find any caterpillars.

It looks like flea beetle. Had this on my broccoli and rocket salad. Used ultimate fruit and vegetable bug killer and it worked but need to make sure you spray under the leaves.

As I didn't want to use anything that could be potentially toxic, I bought a fine veg net and covered them with it. Fingers crossed! Will see, in a few weeks, if it worked... Apparently it deters them from jumping from leaf to leaf.
