Slug in pepper

    Slug in pepper

    One of my peppers had a small hole in it so I opened up and to my horror


    I found a slug inside It was about a half inch long.

    Is that common if so what can I do to stop it

    Slugs can eat peppers - I've had the odd one damaged by them. I find the most effective (although not 100% foolproof) solution is copper tape. If you grow your peppers in pots you can put a ring of it around the outside of the pot. If you grow in the soil, get a plastic bottle, cut a section to make a ring, and cut down to open it out. Put copper tape round it leaving a bit at one side to overlap, then put the ring around the stem of the plant and close it up then stick the copper tape down to hold it closed. Push it slightly into the soil so there are no gaps underneath. You also need to make sure that none of the leaves touch the soil or anywhere else slugs could climb onto the plant from like a greenhouse window.

    I do this with my broccoli plants and it works so well that this year I forgot. The plants disappeared completely within a few days. I planted more plants using the copper rings, and have now got some plants!

      Have had slugs nibble mine as well.

          Nowhere near as tasty as Snail in pepper and lacks the crunchiness

            A few years ago I found a caterpillar inside one of mine,never found a slug though,it's not very common to find anything inside. I plant loads of French marigolds as trap crops next to plants I want to protect,slugs have a great attraction to them.

                That looks like a Spanish slug, seasprout. And all Spaniards love peppers, don't they?

                    Oh my goodness....turned me right over that picture has seasprout....made me quite queasy!

                    So, not unheard of but thankfully, quite rare I think anthony.
                    and as horrific as a slug in your salad would be (shudder) its a risk we take because there is always the odd beastie to slip past our defences.

                      As disgusting as a slug in the salad is, I would much rather have one of those that I can see and remove than an invisible and unknown concoction of possibly harmful chemicals that someone has drenched my food in!

                        I found an earwig in a tomato yesterday - was only a cherry tomato so I was quite relieved I'd cut it in half first!! Yuk!
