  • Silly me

    I'm growing Gardener's Delight toms which is great and all that..but I need some for cooking. I'm going to have to get plug ones now, but any ideas on good toms to get for cooking with, say making pasta etc..or roasting? You know..for the sort of thing you'd use a can of chopped toms for...

    You could try tamina, they are supposed to be good all round tomato and are quick growing too. Allegedly they crop earlier than most other varieties (according to the packet anyway)

      Glad you mentioned tamina. I have been given one but didn't know what it is. Is it bush or cordon, and how high will it grow please? Sorry to pinch someone else's thread but it seems silly to start a new one just for that.

        I'm growing it for the first time so not sure how tall it grows. I am pinching out the sideshoots though (I think it said to do that on the packet - certainly read it somewhere as I wasn't sure at first either). At a guess from their current growth I would think they grow fairly tall as they seem on a par with my gardener's delight which definitely get pretty tall.

          Roma is an Italian plum tomato which has almost no seeds and is recommended for sauces and stuff.

            Im growing 6 Roma to make sauces to freeze, and then 6 different types for everything else.

                Oh dear, I've done it all wrong. And I think I'm late planting out my toms too. I'm doing 6 Gardener's Delights..but it's mainly just me (and maybe my toddler) eating raw toms. Should I maybe do fewer GDs and get a few Romas?

                  Tamina are a cordon/vine type, they're ordinary salad type tomatoes. They grow as tall as you'll let them, and also try and side-shoot madly. Quite often they split into 2 main stems, and then try to side-shoot from both In my opinion, they're a bit too juicy for sauces.

                  San Marzano, Roma, Rio Grande, are all plum types. If there's only 2 of you, I don't think you'll need all those Gardener's delight - although you can make sauces from cherry toms, they're a bit seedy and the little one might not like it. Have a look at nurseries/B&Q/garden centres and see what you can find. If you don't find any of the above mentioned, a beefsteak type might do instead?

                    Thanks everyone. Will have a look at the garden centres. Might try Wyevale I suppose as I'm near there today. Or mebbe Homebase, but last time I was there, I saw loads of toms looking very sorry for themselves (but with heavy trusses of fruit).

                      I found some "italian plum" toms labelled "vegetable tomato"..where do I even start with how wrong all that is.

                      I did get two plants though, I'm quite pleased with these two, just budding and they look really healthy ...unlike most of the others.

                        I grew tamina last year. It's a potato leaved variety and I got five trusses when grown as a cordon i.e. nipped out sideshoots.
                        Although I got plenty of good sized tomatoes, the taste was a bit bland I thought!

                          Roma IS good for making sauces.
                          As regardes taste, I think HOW you grow them is as important as the variety. One year we grew "Moneymaker " in the school greenhouse, using ring culture (with sheep manure in the compost) on strawbales.It produced toms with a fantastic flavour!

                            Oh Snadger! Now you tell me! I've got Tamina (got it half price from T&M) As it said it was better outside I've only potted 1 up and will put the rest at the top of the garden (fingers crossed for the good summer we're supposed to be having!) Luckily I'm growing 6 different types)
