  • Showing veg

Does anyone know where I can find advice on showing veg? I have tried search here and I have Googled it but can't find actual 'display' specifics and the show schedule is useless!
PS. show is tomorrow, nothing like pre planning

From reading the blogs of several of the show guys, my understanding is that each show will have its own individual rules. What is it that you are showing specifically?

The show schedule is what u must adhere to. For more advice the nvs forum is no 1 for show advice but its members only. Its about £20 per year to join but u also get a quarterly mag

Thanks for your replies, did look at NVS site, I am a member, but could only find growing to show should have remembered the forum! The schedule is great as far as it goes but I need specifics for staging the produce IYKWIM. Happily, Aberdeenplotter has PM'd me and hopefully will have the answer

Actually £17 at the moment and the quarterly magazine titled Simply Veg is excellent. The NVS is structured so that there are local Branches - district Associations and you can find contact details for these on the NVS website.

I have given Suki some guidance but the most important bit which is too late for this year is that an awful lot depends on the varieties grown. For example Nantes 2 carrots are unlikely to win at a show but the variety Sweet Candle is currently the one to beat. Show Perfection peas are the peas to beat and Kelvedon Wonder is unlikely to win. Of course a good grower growing sweet candle is still likely to beat a poor grower but we all strive to improve.

I have a list of seed to order for next year and plan on a 'timely' start
Many thanks to AP for all the help given.

Ended up only putting a cabbage in plus strawberries and raspberries. Carrot had slug graze on the shoulder and I couldn't find another to make the pair.
Did put some cornflowers in, from seed given out in the spring, plus jam (from homegrown strawberries), marmalade, apricot tea bread and cherry cake. Oven died before I could make the victoria sandwich and scones. I managed the scones in the halogen oven but didn't have time to try the sponge. Waiting to go back at 2pm to see how we all did.

Raspberries 4th, strawberries 2nd and...........drumroll please...............my cabbage came first! Thanks to AP's sage advice I didn't over trim and although it wasn't the largest in the class it was the best. Woohoo!
Next show is the autumn one on August bank holiday. Ok, where is that schedule....................

Well done you. I'm sure that my advice was peripheral to the undoubted quality of your exhibit. What you will find is that by trying to find matching sets of veg, it is totally ruinous to what should have been the kitchen crop. I grow for the kitchen nowadays and grow separately for the showbench. A lot of the show varieties are popular for that purpose because they tend to produce uniform specimens which does tend to make things easier. Keep us posted with your August show. p.s. the red ticket will probably hook you into showing. It's a lovely feeling seeing one on your entry.

Joining the NVS has a lot to recommend it, even if you don't grow for show. A lot of the tips that the exhibition growers pass on (and they do pass on loads of tips very freely) will enable those who don't grow for show to grow better crops for the kitchen. and as A'plotter says, the quarterly magazine is excellent. Well worth the £17.00 annual fee.
