  • Should I bring in my toms ?

I have some very healthy toms growing outside but am wondering if I should cut them off and bring them in to ripen before they get too cold ? Blight ?

The collective wisdom on here seems to be to leave them out so long as there is no danger of frost, the minute frost is likely you must bring them in somehow or they will be ruined.

There was a plant on our site still standing outside in November last year. I'm leaving mine a while longer, but who knows what the weather's planning on doing next. I hear they're predicting snow for October

I think the met office are under pressure to provide the press with a 'story' - they seem to drum up the winter weather panic earlier and earlier each year....

I was considering the same thing last weekend as the greenhouse they are in is unheated, its been dropping to about 0C outside and some of them have started to curl leaves.
However yesterday I noticed a few have started to colour up so I'll be leaving them until they really start to suffer. Which is a pain as I had trays of things ready to follow up.
Seems like everything in there is having a last minute growth spurt; I've got beans, cucumbers and chillies still flowering and everything is jumping in size weekly.

I think now with the icy winds we are getting I have decided to at least put fleece over them.

We pulled up our outdoor tom plants yesterday.
Got quite a few red and green toms to preserve now!

I'm delighted we've had an Indian Summer- we've had a bumper crop over the past 4 weeks. Had the weather been 'normal' we'd have lost 80% of what we would have taken.
