  • Shallots

It looks like my shallots are starting to ripen, the tops are flopping and starting to turn brown. We go away on hols for a couple of weeks next weekend. So...will they be okay left in situ till we're back or do they have to be lifted befor we go? I think i'll be using a lot of them for pickling.

I'm wondering the same. Mine have not flowered or anything but they are pretty much flat on the ground and rather big. Not sure if they are ready though.

Shallots and onions don't (or shouldn't) flower. They are ready when the tops are brown and withered.

Once the foliage is yellowy brown and dead, leave them a fortnight, then dig up and dry off

They are ready to eat whenever you like. If you wish to store them though, once the foliage turns yellow ,ease them with a fork to break the roots. they will then dry out allowing you to lift and store them!
