Shallot recommendations?

    Shallot recommendations?

    I grew Shallot Jermor overwinter and although I got a good harvest (70 modest shallots from 9 sets) I have to say, I don't like the taste at all. I may be spoilt by my onions (overwintered Senshyu and summer Golden Bear F1) but they lacked the sweetness of the onions. Even when cooked in a stew and as soft as anything they were tasteless or even slightly bitter.

    Does anyone have any shallot recommendations?

    I grew Longor this year and had the best shallots for years, the sets split well and grew nice a plump, tastes good too.

        Interestingly I was just looking back at a thread about shallots, the ones recommended by Which. I grew golden gourmet and jermour. Jermour produced a good number of shallots, whereas the golden gourmet all bolted.
        I also grew long red florence (a long bulbed onion) from seed, hyred and santero from heat treated sets.

        Comparing the long red florence taste to the jermour, long red florence were sweeter and not so hot as the jermour. In fact son no2 said he would have thought florence was the shallot, and jermour the onion. Both grew well, but I'll be going with florence from seed again next year.

        Santero sets grew well, none went to seed and I got decent sized bulbs, but the hyred ones were small and disappointing, so I won't bother with those again. I'm considering whether to grow shallots at all, so I'll be interested to see what other people say.
        I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
