  • Selling greenhouse - how easy

    Hi all

I have a 10x6 Ali greenhouse at my ex's but no room for it where I currently am. He is doing the house up to rent and wants me to get rid of it.

Anyone else sold a greenhouse and do they sell well second hand? It cost me £400, would asking £200 be unrealistic?

    Any advice is appreciated

I bought my greenhouses off eBay. Went to Dismantle and Collect (seller helped on one of them, not the other [elderly]).

    I paid £200 (7 years ago) for a 12' x 10' (robust aluminium frame, good Brand)

10' x 6' is probably a more attractive size (smaller is better for many gardens), so I reckon £200 now is probably OK. Although eBay auctions tend to attract more bidders if you start the auction low - 99p say - but you run the risk that there is no one locally who wants to come and get it.

You could try putting it on gumtree for £200 and see how it goes.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
      Pumpkin pi.

Curious about the difference between eBay and Gumtree ... I would guess "More punters on eBay, higher fees" - is that about it?

When I look for something I never think to check Gumtree too ....

I suggest asking local allotment sites if you can put up a For Sale.

If you have room to store it, why not dismantle it and keep it until you have the space for it again?

              I'm
I've bought 2 used greenhouses from eBay myself in the last year, both were 8 x 6 and cost me £60 and £50.
I think in honesty you'd be very lucky to get £200 on eBay, also be aware that lots more people will be looking for one in early spring than now so if you could find somewhere to store it til then you could potentially get a lot more bidders.

If able to store, I would also take photos before dismantling

I think you might struggle to get £200 but wish you luck

Gumtree is aimed at local buyers and sellers, so people would look at adverts for their own area, plus its more like classified ads than an auction site. I never used to use it, but found its brill for garden stuff - at least it is where I live.

I would say going rate for used greenhouses is £100-£125 for anything up to a 8x8 really.

I was looking at a 2nd hand grrenhouse earlier this year,

I noticed that they go for alot more money if they are dismantled and ready to go.

Interesting. personally I would never buy one dismantled as I would use the de-construction process to document how to put it back together again (with lots of photos)

something is only worth what someone else will pay for it. You'll get more money if there're 2 or more people after a thing, of course.
As a greenhouse can't be posted, you're reliant on finding that person in your immediate locality. If there are lots of GHs available already at low cost, then you won't get very much at all for it.

Look on eb@y under "completed listings" to see what they've been selling for in your area

in my area, they're going for £25-£60, on average, with a few going for £100

                              That's right.

Timing also makes a difference: people will usually be looking for GHs in the spring/summer, so there'll be more bidding & potentially, higher prices.

If I'm selling I try to list things "in season" (esp. before Xmas when people pay silly money to get something in time) but if I'm buying I look for "out of season" bargains
