  • self watering container...or bed

hi i've been serching on the forum but i didn't find anything about selfwatering container... i've been in B&Q and found this small self watering pot for £ 2.59 but i thought that it wasn't worth buy because first are too small and second the bottom container is only 1cm deep so is not gonna contain a lot of water... so i was looking in my shed and i find bit and bobs and i think to make one by myself... what i find is some cheese mould that i use to make ricotta that are perfect for make a wick and i find from pound shop 2 pot for 1 pound plus i have a pipe leftover....anyone have any tips for me to make a perfect one? someone have already made some self watering container in the past and they were successfull or not? is a possible make a self watering bed or is not?
    thanks

What my father used to do was get an empty 2 litre bottle, put some holes in it and bury it standing in the middle of a bed / crops with just the cap showing. he would then fill he bottle once buried and only refill it once it was empty thus allowing a slow release. He still swears by it but I have not tried it for myself yet. Anyone else heard of this or seen it done? It is possible that my dad is slightly crazy and this does little but would be interesting to see what others think

Use self watering containers for my tomatoes as I'm now growing them hydroponically (did well last year despite the terrible weather). Need to top up the water reservoir about once a week. Bought the containers from Lidls and the same containers are back on sale on 1st of March.

I made half a dozen of these and put floats in the pipe with a full & empty mark on the float.

I use a self watering bed for the tomatoes using soaker pots. Cheap terracotta pots with the hole sealed sunk in the ground to the rim, filled with water and covered. They only need filling about once a week. Just remember to take them out in winter. Works a treat!!!!

Thank a lot guy a lot good idea. When I'll finish my container I'll post a picture so anyone can comment it. I think I will put some small chain as well to make a self watering basket for my front door. For the pot burried in the bed does it work as well for a patio bed tall 30cm?
