  • Seedy Saturday -Carmarthen 11th February

This years Seedy Saturday will once again be held in St. Peter's Hall, Nott
    Square, Carmarthen, SA31 1PG on 11th February from 10am - 3pm. Free entry and
    refreshments available.
It is an opportunity for local gardeners and growers to get together to swap
their saved seeds and knowledge and make plans for the coming season.
As well as the seed swap table there will be lots of other sustainable products,
crafts and information from local groups.
Tools for Self Reliance Cymru will be selling their range of quality
reconditioned garden, green woodworking, carpentry and DIY tools. There will
also be a selection of Fairtrade tools made by blacksmiths in Tanzania and sold
exclusively by ourselves. Depending on current stocks these will hopefully
include draw knives, billhooks, adzes, side axes, root lifters, hand forks,
trowels and the ever-popular Shinyanga Bells.

And you're too far away for me a-a!
Perhaps the Mods would consider a Sticky or a separate thread for Seedy and Potato days if we ask nicely ..... Please?

Is it only acceptable to bring home saved seed or are half packets still in date acceptable at these things? I've beed handed a few which I won't use that I wouldn't mind swapping for the odd thing or two.

I'd like to know that too, M. I've never been to one before so have no idea how they operate. We could always swap with each other!

You know what I'm going to ask don't you? What is a 'Shinyanga Bell'?
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

VC I have just followed your link and have to say what a cracking charity. No money going to corrupt officials and help where it is needed at the grass roots, spot on.

There are tool collecting boxes in various places throughout South Wales perhaps elsewhere too. The tools are refurbished and sent off where ever they can be used. However, there are some tools which are sold off at events like this and I'm looking forward to seeing what they have. A friend of mine bought an old English scythe from them as there's not much call for those in Africa. It was very reasonably priced.

VC from what I read I think that whats happening is that the charity send the refurbished tools out to Africa and then import the goods made and sell them in this country. Their bill hooks looked really impressive top quality.

They do both, Pots. Sell the donated and refurbished tools here that cannot be used in Africa and import handmade products from the villages that they help to tool up. The surplus tools (and new African ones) tend to be sold at events like this one, but I've also seen them at the green living type festivals and smallholder shows. You used to be able to go to their workshops in Crickhowell and buy there - not sure that you can do that now.
Now, do I need a bill hook?
