  • Seedlings, Seedlings and more Seedlings

    Hi All,

Hope we are all well and getting massively excited at the warming weather and spring like conditions.

I got rather carried away last weekend with the mrs [not in that sense] and we sowed literally thousands of seeds in 4 windowsill propogators I bought at my local pound land. Not expecting much success I am pleased to say we have been successful and all seeds have germinated. Vegetables sown include kale, brussel sprouts, cos lettuce, spring onions, purple sprouting broccoli, pak choi, red cabbage and savoy cabbage.

All the seedlings are approximately 4cm tall and very thin and are falling over. I'm guessing I didnt plant the seeds deep enough but I could be wrong. My question is [i got there in the end] is that when i decide to plant them on into larger plots to put in my dads greenhouse should i bury them half way up the stem to provide support or will this cause the delicate stems to rot when surrounded in compost.

I dont want to lose them!

Any comments would be much appreciated.

    Happy Gardening, Ross

Yes is the short answer. I have done just the same as you - as soon as my brassicas showed their seed leaves I have put them outside in my plastic mini greenhouse and as soon as they have the second set of leaves they will be potted on much deeper.

I am now eyeing up my tomato seedlings for the same treatment.

Your seedlings are too warm and don't have enough light.

Will they be better off in the [unheated] greenhouse now? I'm just a tiny bit scared its not quite warm enough up here yet.

Yes, all of those would germinate in an unheated greenhouse.

Here's an earlier thread, showing minimum temps needed for germination. It'll surprise you

thanks two sheds, made me feel a bit better. I have planted quite a bit last weekend when it was warm, and left them in my unheated gh, thought i have lost them all as its got a bit colder - so fingers crossed.

I don't have a propagtor so my seedlings have to cope with coldframe, mini greenhouse, or kitchen windowsill - so your greenhouse should be fine....
