  • Seed trays

I'll be buying some seed trays to germinate some carrots, spring onions and spinach. I was just wondering which tray will be suitable for these vegetables. I'm choosing between 40 and 24 cell tray inserts. Which trays will be suitable? Once the seedlings have germinated I will move them in the garden pretty quickly.

Carrots don't really work in cell trays. Either sow them in deep pots where they will grow to maturity, or sow them straight into the garden. Spring onions and spinach, I go for the smaller cells and only sow a few (very few) seeds per cell.

As above. Sow carrots direct and personally at this time of year I'd sow spring onions direct as well.

I did sow some carrots in the garden over 4 weeks back but none seem to have germinated. Do you think those seeds still have a chance of germination?

I'd give it a bit longer before you sow more, they do take a while to germinate, or it may be that slugs have got to them before they've had the chance. I certainly wouldn't sow carrots to transplant, it's better to sow directly into the ground or the pot you're going to grow them in.

Slugs probably had them before you noticed

Or, if your soil caps (mine does) a carrot can't always break through. I get round this by sowing a drill then topping with mpc instead of soil

Some have started to show now, so hopefully most will.
