  • Seed potatoes - to reuse?

Hello. I have dug up a few potatoes today and took note of the seed potatoes that came up with the crop. Am I right in thinking that I can re-plant these for a new harvest, and if so what do I need to do (other than stick it back in the ground)?

Sorry I don't know what the variety of potato is.

No, you don't re-use the original seed potato. You can save some of your nice ones (about the size of a hen's egg). You will need to keep them cool until planting time (TS puts them in the salad drawer of the "spare" fridge.

I found the seed potato of a plant today. Trouble is, there was nothing attached to it.

I've dug up two lots of PFA [just two lots of haulms] and got a handful or so of new potatoes, but also one really big old one, so i can't tell if it's the original one, or just another two big ones if that makes sense...I put them both in the fridge though in case...

What do you do with them after they've been in the fridge? Do you chit them like you would a seed potato or just pop them straight into the soil?

Treat them as you would a normal seed potato. The keeping in the fridge bit is just to stop them going soft and orrible.

First time i've grown them and went a bit mad. About half the garden is dedicated to them lol

Cheers rustylady, they're in their egg boxes chitting along with some bought in seed potatoes - a little experiment see which does the best.

Never thought of using my potatoes as seed, will they last long enough for use next year?

Poppysocks, it's most likely that the potatoes being saved from the harvest now are for use as seeds for Christmas spuds which are probably going to be planted this month ready for then.
