  • Seed Germination - Electric Prop

    Hi Folks,

As soon as the seeds germinate do I move to a cool propagator?

I open the vent for a few days, then pot up when large enough to handle.

As I understand it, once they are "up" they need light more than heat, so I move mine to an unheated propagator on a sunny windowsill, making sure that they don't get too cold over night.

        Hi BM,

I've got about 20 in the prop, 2 showing so far so to open vents or not?

        Hi HS,

When you say they "don't get too cold over night" assume you cover with fleece or something?

        Thanks for your replies

I usually hatch the seeds in a heated propagator with the lid off then leave them in there until they have their proper leaves before moving out but then again I have three propagators on the go.

            Hi Paul,

Silly question perhaps but why the lid off?
            Cheers

Windowsills can get cold at night if it's cold outside. I just move them off the windowsill and into the room. If in doubt and you have a max/min thermometer try leaving that on the windowsill for 24hrs and see what the readings are.

                Thanks HS,

Nothing worse then getting them going then freezing the poor little bu*****?

Vents open or lids off in the day. Lids on at night.

Problem in spring is chill at night and baking them off when the sun comes out in the day.

Aim for consistency. most between 8-20 c

I move them out as soon as I have achieved as much germination as is likely.

                    Thanks Paulottie,

Is it fair to say its a juggling act?

mimics warm soil with plenty of light stops the seedlings getting (sweaty) just my thought if the propagator gets like a turkish bath because the moisture has nowhere to go will this cause damping off the same as watering seedlings from the top, or there again I would probably wake up at two in the morning and think damn I forgot to put the lid back on or even worse be ten miles away from home and remember I hadn't taken the lids off.

Heat causes top growth and if not matched by light, will cause legginess.

I may be going senile, but I have read through the posts on this thread three times and I can't see anywhere what seeds are we talking about. I could assume from the comments that it is either tomatoes or peppers. At present mine are kept in the propagator with the lid on unless it is a warm day in which case I remove the lid for a couple of hours. I would however point out that the unit is a large one 3' by 3' by 18" high which does make a difference. At the moment the temp is set at 20deg.

                              Morning Ian,

I was indeed talking about tom's, cuc's, and peppers/chilli's although I assume the initial question stands for any seed?
                              Cheers
