  • Seed garlic

Hi all, has anyone been thinking about where to get there seed garlic from this year. I have been looking around and everywhere seems to have put there prices up quite a lot from last year. I can only imagine its because of the bad weather and the effect in the crop. So, where is everyone getting there from?

i was just looking on the web at garlic, but last weekend i noticed wilko's had their autumn planting bulbs in and on the bottom shelf were a pack of 3 garlic for 2 quid, so im just gonna get them.

Oh and they also had some senshyu onions in for 2 quid a pack too (for 50 bulbs), so i will probably get a pack of those too lol

T@M have free postage this weekend so a decent saving on garlic. You can't use a voucher with it though.

I'm going to plant saved cloves/bulbs from this harvest for garlic and shallots, but get onions from our local wyevale.

hmm the only problem with buying them from a supermarket/greengrocer is that they are usually grown in spain, so the are not the best type for our climate and they may also be carrying disease!

Mine aren't - they are usually from Leicester and my own - Derby.

Last year I splashed out on some Early Purple from the Garlic Place [Isle of Wight] and some of their Elephant Garlic and it was those that ended up with White Rot. Mine were 95% clean.

It's little cloves you want - not big ones. The big ones produce more smaller cloves, and the little ones produce less bigger cloves.

The bulbs themselves are fairly big; and contain lots of small healthy cloves ^_^

                        Will be an interesting experiment.

I always thought the bigger cloves were the ones to plant, I use the ones on the outside of the bulb to plant and use the smaller ones for cooking.
On page 5 of this link http://www.michiganorganic.msu.edu/u...20Michigan.pdf it says to use the biggest cloves. I've never made a comparison though, so I can't speak from experience.

My research showed that small cloves produced a smaller number of big cloves, whereas big cloves produced a bigger number of small cloves. But that's in Derby, not Michigan!
