  • Scuse me guv - got some windowsill going spare

If you do have some windowsill going spare, especially if its well lit have a go at the following.

Take a good sized pot, 8-10" across and after crocking the bottom fill it with good multi purpose compost. Sow into this about 4 -6 DWARF French bean seeds. Pop onto your windowsill but remember, beans dont like the cold so if need be, bring them inside the curtains at night.

In around 10 weeks you will have some fresh, very early beans for the pot. As French beans are self fertile, you dont have to worry about pollination either and as they only grow about 16" high, they wont swamp your windowsill.

Thanks for that suggestion Piglet. I have a packet of 'Speedy' Dwarf french beans and wondered if I could start them now indoors. Off to find a pot now

I daren't use some of windowsills cos of the cats. Mostly they are ok but you never know.
The man over the road has gone away for 3 weeks, If he'd left me a key I could have borrowed all his windowsills. They could have been up and sprouted and in the greenhouse before he came back lol

Very few windowsills in this house - and what we have are always in use - they're my 'propagator!'
                    It's me that's going spare!

There's a reason my curtain rods are all big, sturdy wooden poles with well secured fixings....amazing what you can do with a bit of heavy duty string, if you don't mind the draft !

Thanks Piglet. My new conservatory is well under way and as soon as the workmen are finished I'll get a pot in there.
