I am fortunate enough to have inherited 2 large compost pits with nice dark rich matter, once i have sifted out the woody bits. However, i have been mixing this with some soil for potting on seedlings and am finding that apparently from nowhere weeds are shooting up. I am presuming that these seeds are lying dormant in the compost and i am reviving them by watering etc. Is there any way of "sanitising" my compost before i use it.?

It is just as likely that the seeds are in your soil. If it is only being used for potting on then I would not bother to go to the expense of sterilising either your compost or your soil just pick out the seedlings as they appear.

I have very fond memories of my stepfather with a sheet metal tray affair with sides of about 10 inches. This sat on top of the gas stove filled with sieved garden soil & compost and cooked for 4 or 5 hours, very gently. He stired it frequently so it 'cooked' all through then allowed it to cool before use. Smelt wonderful.
I guess you could bake smaller amounts in the oven
