    Salty compost

    Bit of an odd one this:
    Over the weekend, roughly one and a half shakers' worth of salt was spilled in the kitchen, and my OH scooped it up and unknowingly dumped it in a bag of peelings destined for the compost heap (not the bin). I later added the peelings, not knowing there was a load of salt in there too. Unfortunately it was then watered, as the heap was looking a bit dry. Will this be a problem? Can I still use the compost?

    I would say yes, others may disagree, keeping it wetter than normal may wash some of it out. People use sea weed and that must have some salt on it.

      I would also say yes I'm sure after everything starts breaking down and if you water it, it should be ok

        The other thing that occurs to me is to mix it well a few times and maybe combine it with another batch, it might even deter slugs!

          Seaweed used to be collected by the ton and carted straight onto the land, I know that rain may have washed some of the salt off it before it was collected but there must have still been some salt content when it was spread. If you mix it well and spread it well I am sure that there should not be a problem.

            I live by the sea would it be a good idea to collect a bag and put it on my compost?
