  • Salt in grow bags

Hi all, potted tomatoes in to grow bags Monday night, Tuesday morning a damned slug had chomped straight through 1 of them!! I replaced the recently deceased plant and then Tuesday evening I pored salt around each plant to keep the slugs at bay.
Will this effect/damage the plants in any way?

The leaves that salt landed on died but I'm assuming that is because the salt dried them out.

The salt will wash into the soil and be absorbed by the plant, all depends on how much salt you put down to how much damage they will have. Salt kills most plants.

Tomatoes in particular are intolerant to salt.

Salt on or around plants is a no - no. It kills plants as well as slugs.

If you need to use salt can you not just spread it round the grow bag and not onto the soil? They'll slide through it before they get to the plants
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

The grass is dead on the edge of roundabout islands because of over zealous salting of the roads. Salt is a residual weedkiller.

I put pots in the grow bags to water the roots so hopefully I can get the salt off of the surface before too much damage is done, maybe? Will that work?

There's only one way to find out - scrape it off asap and top it up with new compost
