    Salads

    For growing Salads the likes of:

    Lettuces, all different varieties
    Radish'es
    Spring Onions

    Do people have a dedicated area for them, like a salad planter or a just salad bed?? or do you just grow them in the veg beds?

    Trying to decide if to make a dedicated Salad bed or get a salad planter so as to not waste space in the veg beds.

    My lettuce are grown in window boxes stood on a ladder that horizontally hung on the garage wall seems to work the slugs don't like walking on the aluminium ladder.
    Location....East Midlands.

      I have small salad bed in front of my greenhouse Hinksy. Usual stuff as you mentioned + outdoor cucumber grown up mesh to the side.
      I also however, grow salad bits where ever they will fit in ie at the base of the runner beans. It's nice to have a "proper" place but if you are short of space dot them where you can

        Spring onions go with other alliums in my rotation. Lettuce goes anywhere with some shade (usually in between bean rows).

          Anwhere theres room. Patio containers, gaps in the borders, spare shelf on the greenhouse staging. Even grown them in sunny corners on the gravel drive!

            Agree totally but I always grow a pot of come & cut again lettuce such as salad bowl just outside the back door as it looks attractive & you can pop out at the last minute.

              I planted a full border with ed and green lettuce under my bay window at the front last year and everyone remarked how good it looked.
              Basically anywher will do for lettuce. Just make sure you keep sowing it because once you have grown your own you won't be sattisfied with the shop bought stuff !

                I just bought some salad hanging bags, in an atempt to defeat the slugs! From Nutleys garden supplies off of ebay. Sorry cant find the link!

                  Grow loads of nasturtiums along the edges of your beds. They look great, they attract beneficial insects, and both flowers and leaves are edible in salads.
                  Tour of my back garden mini-orchard.
